The Lake County Black Bears return from their opening series unscathed, outscoring the Space Coast Surge, 20-4, to sweep the three game series.
The Black Bears continued their strong pitching as Broc Coffman threw a two-hitter through 51/3 innings as the Surge failed to reach the launching pad. Corey Bass, Brandon Garner and Jameson Maj continued Broc's control to secure the second shutout by allowing only one more hit.
Pitching is always easier when you have the Black Bears Bomb Squad come to the plate and account for seven hits, including a double by shortstop Joaquin Rodriguez, for run support. Tavares own Justin Justice hits the first home run of the Black Bears young season, a 2 run shot, to close out the scoring in the top of the ninth as Lake County goes to 3-0 and heads back home for their opener at 6 p.m. today.
The Black Bears played a two-game series against the Surge Tuesday and Wednesday before going back on the road to face the 3-0 Miami Diamantes, who swept the Seminole County Naturals.
Gates open at 5 p.m. with Ken Griffey's first pitch at 6:05 p.m. The Best Buy Mascot will make his debut, dancing, running, singing and oh yeah, preceding a baseball game being played by your 3-0 Lake County Black Bears! Be sure to get to the Bears Den early where some lucky fans will get ThunderStix and be the first to get the new Black Bears merchandise fresh out of hibernation.
Also, with the help of Firehouse Subs in Leesburg and The Villages, we want to recognize those in Lake County who go above and beyond with the Hero of the Game Award. If you know of someone who has done something in the community who should be appreciated in public, please let us know by sending an e-mail to playball@lakecountyblackbears.com.
